Tides are changing, but our commitment to sustainability is not.

After more than 40 years of serving Wild Alaskan Halibut, we’re making a sad but necessary change to our menu.

The Alaskan halibut population is in a dire situation: the 2025 quota is at a 20-year low, and the spawn is the lowest we’ve seen since the 1970’s. As inventory is so sparse, any halibut that is caught is being sold in the fresh market at a premium. In response, fishing boats are choosing to fish for more abundant, easier to catch species.

Simply put, the fishery can’t provide the quantity of halibut that we need to meet demand—and sustainability has always been non-negotiable for us at Burgerville. So, we’re pressing pause on serving halibut to give the species time to repopulate.

We didn’t make this decision lightly. We know our Halibut Fish & Chips and Crispy Halibut Sandwich have been longtime guest favorites, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who’s made them a part of their Burgerville tradition.

We’re using this shift as an opportunity to take a seasonal, wild-caught approach to seafood—helping relieve pressure on limited species. That means we can stay true to responsible sourcing and bring you a greater variety of high-quality, wild-caught fish throughout the year.

You Helped Us Land the Perfect Catch — Alaskan Pacific Cod

We first planned to debut with Alaskan Black Cod, but before launching it, we wanted your input — and yes, we probably should’ve started there.

A large group Halibut-loving Localville members joined a blind taste test of several options, including our halibut.

The runaway favorite? Alaskan Pacific Cod — praised for its mild flavor, meaty texture, and perfectly flaky bite. It pairs wonderfully with our signature tartar sauce and the same great panko breading you know from our halibut.

Aside from being the tastiest choice, Alaskan Pacific Cod is also a more sustainable choice. The wild waters of the Alaskan Pacific are home to healthy inventories of this fish species, meaning there is no risk of overfishing. Our fishing partners use sustainable fishing practices to reduce bycatch and to protect the larger ecosystem.

Thanks to your feedback, wild Alaskan Pacific Cod will be our very first seasonal catch. For our halibut fans — don’t worry — we’ll bring it back as a seasonal catch when the population permits.

While we reel in the finest certified-sustainable cod, there will be a short pause in seafood offerings — but it’ll be worth the wait.
